We are clearly proud of the diversity of stamps here at Sellos de Caucho 24; they range from large formats to those that fit inside a shirt pocket, all of which can be customised. However, think of your ancestors, who couldn't choose from such a wide variety of stamps.
Do you know how stamps have developed over time?
The history of stamps can be traced back to 100 BC, as there are records that at that time in China, people engraved text on stamps before dipping them in ink and using them to print content on paper. However, these stamps were not necessarily made of rubber or metal, but of thick leather or blocks.
Still, these early stamps were used in the same way as modern conventional stamps. And why alter a technique that works so well? The method by which these first stamps were made was adopted in Europe in the 14th century.
Currently, we cannot say exactly when the modern stamp was invented, but one possibility is it appeared in the 19th century with B.B. Hill when its rubber Brass Wheel Ribbon Ticket Dater was first seen. Hill has even been named “the father of the automatic stamp.”
By the early 20th century, there was already a firmly established industry for stamps. After World War II, plastic parts began to replace wood in the production of stamps. Self-inking stamps with built-in stamp pads were introduced in the early 70s. Today, in the 21st century, stamps are present everywhere and are used for a variety of purposes.
And what about you? Do you already have yours?
